The oxygen is introduced into the sintering chamber by means of a cathode sprayed with an oxygen gas which reacts with metal from the particulate MoSi.sub.2 to form the oxide on the cathode as a metal oxide layer. This is an acceptable technique since the oxygen gas does not sinter together with the MoSi.sub.2 to form a second phase which may degrade the performance of the MoSi.sub.2 as a power device.
